Have any of you read these books? Are they worth buying? Are they better than the movies? I just picked up the Hobbit at a used book store and so far I like what I'm reading

If you like The Hobbit, then you will love The Lord of the Rings.
As as tt pointed out, they are a tad long, but nowhere near as long as they could have been.
You will notice a lot of differences between the movies and the books, but as with most movies that are made into movies, you can see why, but I definately think that both the books and the movies are equally great.

They kick ASS. Brilliantly written. And you get what the movies left out, the best part... Tom Bombadil!

The movies missed out on many things from the books.
They're definetely worth buying.

Alright, I'll pick them up sometime in the near future. Thanks for the feedback guys If you want to be a sucessful writer pick up a few successful books. Like the first Tom Clancy novels. Heck just look up award winners like Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead.

Bombadil was amazing I still haven't forgiven them for that I was always pissed about the fact that they left out Elrond's sons.

Dino, the books are fantastic. I've read them a hundred times.
I was choked they left out Tom Bombadil as well, and the fact the Riders came down from the north, AND the Houses of Healing. But I've forgiven Peter Jackson, I'm sure he cares.
