CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) - The Calgary Flames on Wednesday re-signed Jordan Leopold, the team's leading scorer among defensemen last season.
Terms were not disclosed. Leopold made $900,000 last season.
"Jordan is a good young defenseman who we expect to continue to develop and improve his game," Flames general manager and coach Darryl Sutter said. "With his age and ability, he is a strong fit for our organization. He will play an important role in what we are building here in Calgary."
Leopold, 24, was one of five Flames to play in all 82 games last season, producing nine goals and 24 assists. He was second on the team in average ice time (22:13) and was whistled for 24 penalty minutes.
In the 2004 playoffs, Leopold played in all 26 games and led all defensemen with 10 assists as Calgary reached Game Seven of the Stanley Cup Finals before losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
A product of the University of Minnesota, Leopold was a 1999 second-round of Anaheim, which traded him to Calgary prior to the 2000 season for forward Andrei Nazarov and a 2001 second-round pick.
In 140 NHL games with Calgary, Leopold has 13 goals, 34 assists and 36 penalty minutes. He will represent the United States later this month in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.

He signed a 1 year 950K deal.
Its a good thing that he didn't get much of a raise as they can afford both Kipper and Iggy.
However because he makes so little, Gauthier probably won't be with the team next year as leopold is due for a decent raise next year.
