The National Hockey League and NHL Players' Association met for several hours on Tuesday, Aug. 17 in New Jersey. Following the meeting, NHL Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer Bill Daly issued the following statement:
"I can't report that we made any progress today, because we didn't. We asked the Players' Association directly what their response was with respect to the six proposals we made to them, and they were very clear that they're not amenable to any of those proposals, so they've been rejected.
"We told the Union today that we're available every day between now and Sept. 15 to try to get this resolved. We set four dates for future meetings: August 25 and 26 in Ottawa and August 31 and Sept. 1 in Montreal. My own view is that time is running short. We have less than 30 days now to the expiration date of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and we need to start talking about solutions.
"We had a good dialogue today, and I would hope the dialogue we had was for a purpose; and I would hope at some point we would hear back from the Union as to whether they have any alternative solutions. The last and only proposal the Players' Association made to us was in June of 2003, which is now almost 15 months ago. They have not suggested any alternatives since then, and so we're talking about a proposal which we told them almost 15 months ago would not work."
