Hey, are there any martial artists on this board? I ask, because I was, at one point, a long, long time ago. Then, with marriage, a kid, ect, I had no time or money to pursue my interests. Well, now with a new job, and a little more time on my hands, I am interested in starting up again. To be honest, my period of "Learning to Kick Ass" is over and done with. I feel I have enough of a foundation to take care of myself in most situations, but I am now interested in getting back into shape (besides round, I mean ) and learning a style that will test me both mentally and physically. Something that is a pure, mastery of the art and oneself type of style. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know. I am open to pretty much anything, except rolling around on the ground with a sweaty man between my legs. I guess that kind of goes without saying, though, right?

Give Tae Kwon Do a try! (I've heard it's cool) I actually have tried it. I gave it a year, but I'm not of the body type to be doing reverse backflip triple spinning kicks. Or whatever they are called. Thanks for the thought, though.

I did kung fu for about 8 or 9 years but then I found a new passion... ;D
Some of my friends do Hap Ki Do while another one did martial arts with Calgary TaiChi.

That's pretty sweet. What style of Kung-Fu? And yes, Hap Ki Do is, from what I have heard, a great all-around style. I worked with a guy who had his Black belt in it, and actually said that it involved a lot of ground fighting, which, in my mind, involves a lot of rolling around on the ground with another sweaty guy between your legs. Not so appealing, you know? Thanks for the feedback, though. I am really interested in the kung-fu style you took. It may be something I would be interested in, so perhaps let me know. Thanks.

Similar, I'm sure, to the Scottish martial art described in "So I married an axe murderer". That style, of course, being called "Fuck-Yu", which involves alot of headbutting and kicking the person when they are down. Hmm... You may just be onto something.

I was taught the Shaolin one. It's the most effective form of keeping in shape while learning self-defense IMO.

take up kick boxing/muay thai, I did for a while. I'm gonna take-up boxing real soon. That was my main style, actually. I took 5 years of Kickboxing. Actually, that is a bit of a misnomer. I took a style called San- Shou, which is very similar to Muay Thai. I did that until I faced the 10th ranked SuperHeavy Weight in North America, who proceeded to put me in the hospital. Nuff of that, I thought. I've also tried my hand at Ninjutsu, Renbukai Karate, and a year and a bit of Tae Kwon Do (Like I said, I'm not quite the build for that) I like the idea of Shaolin, but again, not too condusive with my body style. I worked with a guy a couple of years back who was an instructor at Temple Kung-Fu, and he fit the mold perfectly. What I have been really looking at is a style called "Kyokushinkai Karate". Very similar to my kickboxing background, but a little more in depth. Also, to advance in rank, you need to have a certain number of fights to your name. Me rikey very much. Anywho, thanks for the feedback, guys. I really didn't expect this thread to go anywhere, so the answers I got are really appreciated.

I didn't like the rules where you can give people kicks to the knee caps and blow their legs off. good luck in your choice man!
